Bamboo Harvest

guadua bamboo harvest

Harvesting takes place after 3 to 6 years, harvest maturity is recognized by the lichens on the culms. Cutting the mature culms does not lead to the death of the entire plant.

The bamboo is cut one week after full moon. At this time there is less capillary water in the culms due to the weaker gravitation of the moon. This has two advantages: on the one hand the bamboo is not so heavy and on the other hand it dries faster.

On the basis of photosynthesis, in the course of the morning the bamboo transports starch from the roots into the leaves, furthermore there is more water in the culms. If the harvest therefore takes place before sunrise, the starch is still in the roots. The more starch is in the culms, the more nutritious and attractive it is to wood-eating insects. There for we cut in the afternoon, at that time the starch is in the leaves and less water is in the culm.

The culms stay cut and standing up vertically on the plantation for 1 week with the branches and the leaves attached in order to remove the free capillary water using the natural evaporation process.

Bamboo Immunization

After harvesting and transporting the bamboo canes to our plant, a mixture of water and natural, nonpolluting chemicals, such as borax and boric acid are pressed with high pressure into the bamboo. This method is better known as "Boucherie". This procedure requires a period of 8 hours until the preservative leaves the bamboo canes.

Sorting Bamboo

After washing the immunized canes, sorting the bamboo poles by diameter and marking them for easy inventory, is the next step. It is also another quality control, to make sure only the straightest poles pass this stage.

Drying Bamboo

After sorting the bamboo poles, they are naturally dried for a period of approximately 3 months. The poles are laid out flat in open air, however never in direct contact with the soil. On a regular basis the poles are turned until totally dried.

Cleaning Bamboo

Before storing the dry bamboo poles, they all receive a last wash with the high pressure water gun. This will eliminate small spots and dirt, until only the golden brown color remains.

Storing Bamboo
